Show Business. Two separate words:Â Show.Â Business. Each equally important to the success of any filmmaker, yet so many of us choose to only focus on one over the other. And almost always, we only focus on the showâ¦ ultimately neglecting half of the equation. This is a natural tendency for filmmakers, as most of us are creative people who started making filmsÂ because we love the art of storytellingâ¦ Not necessarily because we love the business of movie making (although some of us do!). The truth of the matter though, is that for any of us to succeed as filmmakers we need to playÂ both sides of the coin. We may be driven by our desire to express ourselves through art, butÂ that dream will only be fully realizedÂ when we understand the business well enoughÂ to actually make a living off of our work. The good news is, we donât need to compromise creativity in order to flourish as filmmakers from a business standpoint. We just need to understand that the best way to succeed is by tapping into theÂ powerful intersection that isÂ art and commerceâ¦ Although this is often easier said than done.
